Who it is for
- Senior associates who need to show they can bring in work before a partnership decision. See coaches for partner-track lawyers.
- New and lateral partners expected to build or rebuild a book.
- Practice group leaders building a pipeline for a team.
- Solo and small-firm owners who need clients. For running and growing the firm itself, see law firm coaching for solo and small-firm owners.
By career stage
- Partners 35 coaches who work with partners
- Associates 25 coaches who work with associates
- In-house lawyers 18 coaches who work with in-house lawyers
- Law firm owners 14 coaches who work with law firm owners
- Law students 8 coaches who work with law students
- General counsel 7 coaches who work with general counsel
- Government lawyers 4 coaches who work with government lawyers
When to hire one
- A few years before your partnership review, while relationships have time to grow.
- When your firm offers to pay.
- After a lateral move, when you need to rebuild your network.
- When you know what to do but keep not doing it.
What to ask before you hire
- Who have you coached in a practice like mine, at a firm like mine?
- What will we do between sessions, and how will we track progress?
- If my firm pays, what will you report to the firm? For coaches bound by the ICF Code of Ethics, standard 2.1 [1] requires the strictest confidentiality with all parties, and standard 2.2 [2] requires a clear agreement among everyone involved, including a firm that pays, on what information is shared and how.
- Is there a minimum term, and can I stop after a few sessions?
On price, the International Coaching Federation’s global study found an average fee of $272 [3] for a one-hour coaching session in North America in 2022 [4]. It found that coaches who specialize in business coaching tend to earn above-average revenue from coaching, mainly because they charge higher fees per one-hour session on average [5]. In that study, business coaching means leadership coaching, executive coaching, coaching for businesses and organizations, and small-business coaching [6], not business development coaching for lawyers in particular. It also found that fees run higher when more clients' coaching is paid for by someone other than the client [7].
Each profile lists the prices confirmed from the coach’s own website, and when at least 3 listings here show a price per session or hour, this page shows the range. Our guides to business development for lawyers and what a lawyer coach costs go further.
What business development coaches charge
Prices that coaches in this specialty publish on their own websites. Each dot is one coach; the shaded band holds the middle half of the prices.

Questions about business development coaching
How much should a business coach cost?
For coaching in general, the North American average was $272 [3] for a one-hour session in 2022 [4], according to the International Coaching Federation’s global study. The same study found that coaches who specialize in business coaching tend to earn above-average revenue from coaching, mainly because they charge higher fees per one-hour session on average [5]. In that study, business coaching means leadership coaching, executive coaching, coaching for businesses and organizations, and small-business coaching [6]. Ask whether a price is per session, per month or for a fixed program. Each profile in this directory lists the prices confirmed from the coach’s own website.
What is rainmaking for lawyers?
Rainmaking means bringing in new clients and new work for yourself or your firm. A lawyer who does it well is called a rainmaker. The clients you bring in and keep are often called your book of business, and at many firms they shape partnership decisions and pay.
Will my firm pay for it?
Ask. Some firms pay for business development coaching, especially for senior associates and new partners, through the professional development or marketing budget. If the firm pays, agree at the start what the coach will report to the firm, if anything.
Why is my firm asking me to do business development coaching?
It is often a sign that the firm is investing in you, not a warning. Firms want future partners to start building relationships early. If you are unsure, ask the partner who arranged it what they hope the coaching will achieve.
How should a young lawyer start business development?
Start with people you already know: classmates, former colleagues and the in-house lawyers you work with, who will be more senior later. Stay in touch, write or speak about your practice area, and do excellent work for the partners who hold client relationships now. A coach helps turn this into a weekly habit.
