Coach or therapist?
A therapist is a licensed clinician who diagnoses and treats mental health conditions. A coach does not: the International Coaching Federation says coaching is not psychology and does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe medication [5], and a psychologist can be a coach, but a coach does not have to be a psychologist [6]. When a coach is also a licensed therapist, the profile says so, and you can filter for coaches who are licensed therapists.
The ABA says confidential help is available to every judge, lawyer, and law student through a free lawyer assistance program in their state, separate from the disciplinary system [7]. These programs help with mental health and substance use, and which services are free differs by program, so ask yours what it covers. What is the difference between a coach and a therapist?
A therapist is a licensed clinician who diagnoses and treats mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. A coach works with you on goals, habits and decisions; the International Coaching Federation says coaching is not psychology and does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe medication [5]. Is a life coach for lawyers worth it?
It can be, when the problem is how you work rather than your health: workload, boundaries, saying no, or deciding whether to stay in your job. Many lawyers prefer a coach who knows legal practice, so check each coach’s background on the profile. A coach is not a substitute for therapy or medical care.
Is work-life balance possible as a lawyer?

How do I set boundaries in Big Law?
Pick the few that matter most, such as protected evenings, a weekend day or a window for answering email, and tell the partners who staff you before a busy stretch, not during one. Hold them in ordinary weeks, flex when a deal or trial truly needs it, and keep your work strong so the boundary never becomes the story. A coach can help you plan and rehearse those conversations.
