Career change coaching at a glance
If the thought in your head is "I hate being a lawyer," start by separating the job from the profession. For some lawyers a different firm, practice area or employer fixes it. Others want out of law entirely. You are not alone in asking: in a national study of about 37,000 lawyers [1] by the ABA and Krill Strategies, 27% [2] said they had considered leaving the profession because of mental health, burnout or stress.
4 of the 43 show a published price. A session or hour costs $250 to $650, with a median of $300.

Who it is for
- Lawyers who are unhappy in practice and cannot yet say why.
- Associates and partners who want out of Big Law but not out of law. See our guide to leaving Big Law.
- Lawyers who want a career outside law, such as business, compliance, policy, education, technology or a venture of their own. See alternative careers for lawyers and JD advantage jobs.
- Former lawyers, sometimes called recovering lawyers, who left and need a next step.
By career stage
- Partners 16 coaches who work with partners

When to hire one
- When you have been unhappy for months and keep putting off a decision.
- Before you resign, while you still have a salary and time to test options.
- When you know you want out but cannot name what comes next.
- When you have a target field but no contacts in it.
- When the decision affects your family’s finances and you want a plan, not a leap.
How to choose a career change coach
Ask whether the coach practiced law, and whether they made a career change themselves. Ask what past clients went on to do and how long the work usually takes. Be wary of long contracts: single sessions or a short program you can stop are easier to test. Compare the credentials and published prices on each profile. Our guides to choosing a career coach and what a lawyer coach costs go further.
If you want a different legal job instead of a new career, see job search and lateral move coaches. For a wider view of the options, start with what you can do with a law degree.

Questions about career change coaching
Is being a lawyer a fulfilling career?
Many lawyers find it fulfilling, and many do not, at least in the job they have now. In a national study of about 37,000 lawyers [1] by the ABA and Krill Strategies, 27% [2] said they had considered leaving the profession because of mental health, burnout or stress. Before you leave law, test whether the problem is the profession or the job: a different employer, practice area or role changes the answer for some lawyers.
How do you leave the practice of law?
Plan the exit before you resign. Name what you want to keep and what you want to stop, list the skills that carry over, talk to former lawyers who do the work you are considering, and test it with a project, a course or volunteer work. Build a financial runway, and check your state bar’s rules on inactive status before you let a license lapse. A career change coach can run this process with you and keep it moving.
Do I hate being a lawyer, or just my job?
Separate the two before you decide. Write down what drains you: the hours, the billable hour, conflict, the clients, the subject matter or the people. If most of it belongs to your current firm or practice, a different legal job may fix it. If it follows you from job to job, the work itself may be the problem.
Is it too late to change careers out of law?
No age rules it out. Later moves tend to go more smoothly when they build on what you already know, such as an industry you advised, a regulatory field, or skills like negotiation and drafting, instead of starting from zero.
Can I afford to change careers?
Work out the numbers before you move. A new field may start you at a lower salary, so map your fixed costs, debt and savings, and decide how many months of runway you need. Some lawyers bridge the gap with contract legal work or a part-time role while they build the new career.
