Who it is for
- Law firm lawyers planning a move in house. Our guide to going in house covers the move itself.
- In-house lawyers aiming for deputy general counsel or general counsel.
- New general counsel, especially first-time GCs building a department.
- General counsel working with a CEO, an executive team and a board.
On stress, a national study by the ABA and Krill Strategies found that in-house roles show lower predicted distress and burnout than private firms and solo practice [1]. That is a difference between groups of lawyers, not a promise that a move in house will lower your own stress.

- Associates 11 coaches who work with associates
- Partners 11 coaches who work with partners

When to hire one
- Before a move in house, to choose companies and prepare for business-focused interviews.
- In the first months of a new in-house role.
- When you are a candidate for a general counsel role, or just got one.
- When you are weighing a move from in house back to a firm, to government or to another company.
How to choose a coach
Some in-house lawyers prefer a coach who has worked in a legal department. Profiles show that background, and you can filter for coaches with in-house experience or coaches with general counsel experience. Profiles also show when a coach appears on the Association of Corporate Counsel’s career coach roster. For leadership coaching that is not specific to in-house roles, see executive and leadership coaches.
If your company pays, agree at the start what the coach will share with your employer. Check credentials with our guide to coaching credentials, and compare published prices on each profile.

Questions about coaching for in-house lawyers
Can you recommend an executive coach for general counsel and in-house lawyers?
We do not recommend individual coaches, and no coach pays to be listed or to rank. This directory lists coaches who name in-house lawyers or general counsel as a focus, in neutral order. Profiles show when a coach worked in house or served as a general counsel, and you can filter the directory for those backgrounds.
How do you become a general counsel?
Most general counsel reach the role after years of practice, either by moving up inside a legal department or by moving in house from a law firm or government. Along the way, build breadth across the legal issues a company faces, learn how the business makes money, manage people, and earn the trust of the executives and board members who choose a general counsel. A company hiring its first general counsel is another route in for experienced lawyers.
How do I adjust to working in-house?
Expect one client with many internal stakeholders, faster answers with less research, and more business judgment. Learn how the company makes money, who decides what, and how to give advice in a few sentences. A coach who worked in house can shorten the learning curve.
How do in-house lawyers get promoted?
It depends on the size of the department and whether a role above you opens. Owning an area of the law for the business, building trust with executives and taking on management are the usual levers. In a small department, the next step up is often a move to another company.
Is going in-house always the better long-term move?
No. It suits some lawyers and not others. A national study by the ABA and Krill Strategies found that in-house roles show lower predicted distress and burnout than private firms and solo practice [1], but an in-house job trades the law firm partnership track for a different career ladder. Our guide to going in house covers the trade-offs.

Solo private practice and private firms are associated with higher predicted prevalence of distress and burnout, while in-house and judicial/academic roles show lower predicted prevalence.
