When to hire one
- When your school’s career office cannot give you the time you need.
- After a review that worries you.
- When imposter syndrome or a confidence slump is affecting your work.
- When you are thinking about leaving your first firm.
Early moves are common. In the NALP Foundation’s attrition survey, 83% [1] of associates who left their firms did so within five years of being hired. A coach can help you decide whether to stay, and if you go, how to leave well.
What to ask a coach
Ask whether the coach has worked with students or junior lawyers in your target practice and city, and what a typical engagement covers. At this stage a few focused sessions are often enough, so be wary of long programs. For writing, see legal writing coaches; for a first job search, see job search coaches.
What coaches for law students and new lawyers charge
Prices that coaches in this specialty publish on their own websites.
Fewer than 3 listings in this specialty show a published price in any one unit, so no range is shown. 19 of the 20 listings in this specialty show no published price, so ask on a first call. What a lawyer coach costs covers every specialty.
Questions about coaching for law students and new lawyers
My law school career office can’t help me. Where else can I get help?
Start with free help: alumni from your school, your firm’s mentoring or professional development staff, and bar association programs for new lawyers. If you need more, an independent career coach can help with resumes, interviews and choosing a path. The coaches in this directory are independent; law school career offices are not listed.
Should I hire a coach before I start at a big firm?
Usually it can wait. Your firm will train you, and the first months teach more than outside advice can. A coach is more useful once you know the job and want help with feedback, workload, a difficult group or a decision about your path.
Is it normal to want to leave my first firm already?
It is common. In the NALP Foundation’s attrition survey, 83% [1] of associates who left their firms did so within five years of being hired. Before you leave, work out whether the problem is the firm, the practice area or law itself.
When do you start feeling like a competent lawyer?
For many lawyers it comes gradually over the first years of practice. Feeling behind early on is normal. Regular feedback, a mentor you can ask basic questions, and a record of what you have learned all help.
How do I find a mentor, inside or outside my firm?
Ask, with a specific question. Look to partners and senior associates you work with, alumni from your law school, and the young lawyer sections of bar associations. A mentor is free and knows your world; a coach adds structure, confidentiality and an outside view.
